Weapons of our Warfare
Warriors are dressed for battle. We have been taught in Ephesians 6:11 to put on the whole armor of God to be able to be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. The parts of the armor are named. I want to focus though on our weapons against the enemy. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
We have three primary weapons to use in our battle against principalities:
The Word of God
The Name of Jesus
The Blood of Jesus
We launch these weapons by prayer, praise, preaching, and our testimony.
The Word of God is our weapon of offense – it is the sword of the Spirit. We are covered by the armor, but the Word is our weapon. The Word is more powerful than a two-edged sword rightly dividing the word of truth. The Rhema that is spoken by God is always a fresh Word. We take it in and speak it out to the enemy. This Rhema word comes in revelation and is from God’s very heart. Jesus always responded out of what He received from the Father. The written Word and the heard voice both carry promise…Is 55:8-11 “So shall My Word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” God’s Rhema carries with it the ability to perform the Word. Spend time in the Word. Memorize Scriptures that speak about answers for problems, salvation, and healing. Use them as you work with people. Listen for His voice as you pray for needs and minister to people. Hear what God is saying.
The Name of Jesus is our weapon of praise. We should praise who He is and what He has done. It stops the mouth of the enemy. The lion’s mouth was closed for Daniel…Paul and Silas sang at midnight with their hands and feet shackled…the answer came. In Acts 4:8-10, “Then Peter, filled with the Holy spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.” V30 “that signs and wonders may be done through the name of your holy Servant Jesus.” The name of Jesus is powerful. John 14: 12-14 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
The Blood of Jesus is sufficient for any need that we have. Rev 12:11 says “And they overcame him (the great dragon, old serpent, the devil and satan in v 9) by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.” Diagram the sentence. Who did they overcome? Satan. How? By the blood and their testimony. Who did they testify to? Satan. It is time for us to remind him of our great promises and what God will do for those who serve Him. Here are some things to testify about:
Eph 1:7 Through the blood of Jesus, I am redeemed out of the hand of the devil. Testimony: Through the blood of Jesus, all of my sins are forgiven.
1 John 1:7 The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, continually cleanses me from all sin. (ongoing process) Testimony: Through the blood of Jesus, I am being continually cleansed.
Rom 5:9 Through the blood of Jesus, I am justified, made righteous; just-as-if-I’d never sinned.
Hebrews 13:12 Through the blood of Jesus, I am sanctified, made holy, set apart to God.
1 Cor 6:19-20 My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, redeemed, cleansed, sanctified by the blood of Jesus. Therefore satan has no place in me, no power over me through the blood of Jesus.
This IS NOT a formula – or rules. It is the truth we need to live by. When we know what God wants to do, we are to seek God with earnestness about it. Pray it in. It is wrong to sit back and wait for it to happen. That is why we have weapons. There are examples in the Bible about people who used swords. David had mighty men, one of which is Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite. In 1 Chronicles 11: 13-14 “He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines. And they set themselves in the mist of that parcel, and delivered it and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance.” 2 Samuel 23:10 says, “He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day.” They got in the middle of their inheritance, their promise and fought against the enemy – being tired, weary, but not letting go of the sword. His hand and his sword became one. Can you see the others having to pry it from his hand and his hand remaining in that clinched position? It was a barley field – it speaks to me of the seed of tomorrow’s planting and harvest. Fight for what you have planted…reap…plant again. Victory will come to those who take their stance in the harvest field and declare the Word of the Lord over the situations that they face. We will speak until the enemy is defeated. Don’t give up…victory is ahead.
Declare who God is to the enemy. David ran against Goliath with a word, 1 Samuel 17: 45, “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, who thou hast defied.” God’s names describe who He will be in every situation. Anxiety bows to Jehovah Shalom, sickness bows to Jehovah Raphe, and put the enemy on the run with the LORD of hosts – commander of the armies of heaven. Speak the Word in faith. It is powerful. Dr. Yongi Cho preached on prayer. He talked about continuing in prayer until an answer came. He said we have to “hit him (satan) on the nose, hit him on the nose, hit him on the nose – until we take back what he is holding. Tenacity in prayer is crucial. Know the Word, use the Word, offer up praise, and declare the testimony of what God has declared!!! Satan is defeated – we sometimes have to remind ourselves and others that the price has been paid.
When you stand before people, you are not coming against flesh and blood. You are disarming the enemy in their life. When you minister, it is good to have a partner – Matt 18:19 “if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” You agree on the Word – the will of what God wants to do…apply the Blood which is sufficient to cover every need…and you pray declaring His name. Use your weapons – the Word, the Name and the Blood. You are a powerful warrior.
Some of this study is from a book by Derek Prince, Secrets of a Prayer Warrior. He brings great insight into the subject of warfare prayer.
