Prayer 101 Introduction
We need an overflow of power from our place of prayer. The disciples never asked Jesus to teach them to preach or do miracles. The one thing they requested was to be able to pray as He prayed. They saw Him operate in power because of the time He spent with the Father. They knew that was the one thing they needed. So, they asked, “Jesus, teach us to pray as you did.” Our cry today should be “teach me!!!”
Prayer is not a formula. It is not just for the times we have a need. It is not a way to get God to do what we want and grant our “wish list”. A lot of Christians use prayer this way. Prayer is the gateway for us to connect with God. Prayer is about loving God and getting into His presence. It is the privilege of bringing others to the throne of God. It is a place of communication, and out of this time, we partner with Him to do what He wants in the earth. When we become aligned with God’s purpose, we are going to pray prayers that are powerful. There will be no power, human or satanic, that will be able to resist the outworking of our prayer. Derek Prince Secrets of a Prayer Warrior p115
We must forget negative memories of unanswered prayer and press toward what the Scripture declares. We must not get caught in the mindset of what God did not do – but pray from what the Word declares that God says He will do. We must not try to come up with answers as to why someone did not get their healing or deliverance. Some may say “it is God’s will” or “it will make you a better person.” What does the Word say? We live and pray from that revelation.
Prayer is not done through our own strength. Rom 8:26 says “In the same way, the Spirit helps our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes with groans that words cannot express.” When we pray, our spirit man connects with the Spirit of God and something begins to come out of us that is supernatural. When the Holy Spirit comes along side of us, we stand shoulder to shoulder and WE pray. Where I am weak – He is strong. When I don’t know what to say – He does. Together we can break through. Together we are powerful – praying what God wants.
Prayer is not about our ability to pray. It is about our God.
Simple prayer works. Be genuine – simple, sincere, honest prayer is what is important. Pray with compassion that understands the pain of other’s lives. Effective prayer does not have to be complicated. Be specific – ask for specific needs and speak into that need. Be yourself. Elijah prayed an effective, righteous prayer. Prayer is not about our ability to pray. It is about our God. It is not about our maturity or age. It is about our God. It is not about how long we have been a Christian. It is about our God. He is good. He wants to give good gifts to His people. James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” God has many characteristics. He is the Lion of Judah and roars against injustice and the enemy. He is the Lamb that was slain with mercy and compassion for the lost and needy. This is how we need to pray. We roar His roar over injustice – We weep with His heart of compassion for the the burdened. We lead the person into contact with God. Even if we don’t see immediate results, they will know that they are loved and have been touched by God.
